How to Learn About Yourself
Vent
Most of us cruise through life thinking we know ourselves, only to realize we barely scratch the surface of who we truly are. Ever wonder why you feel unfulfilled or lost, even when you’re seemingly doing all the “right” things? It’s because you don’t fully understand what makes you tick. If you truly want to feel confident and understand your purpose in life, you need to learn about yourself!
1. Carve Out Time for Self-Reflection
If you want to understand yourself, it starts with prioritizing time alone. Not just scrolling through your phone, but actually sitting with your thoughts. Grab a journal and let your mind wander. No one’s judging you, so be honest.
Why Journaling Helps
Journaling is like having a conversation with your soul. It’s a safe space to process emotions and identify patterns. Don’t worry about making it perfect—just write whatever comes to mind. Over time, you’ll start to see the things that consistently make you happy or stressed. And if writing sounds exhausting, don’t panic. I have a solution for you coming up.
2. Discover Your Personal Productivity Style
You know how some people swear by the early bird routine, while others are useless before noon? That’s because productivity isn’t one-size-fits-all. Figure out when you’re naturally most focused and what work styles energize you.
Real Talk
For me, peak focus is between 7 am and 12 pm. After that, my brain starts to feel like mashed potatoes. Working a traditional 9-to-5 would kill my spirit, so I’ve structured my life around my energy levels. If you’ve been struggling to be productive, it’s probably not you—it’s the system you’re trying to fit into.
Knowing what works for you can save you from burning out and help you design a life you actually love.
3. Identify Your “Why”
Why do you do what you do? And no, “for the paycheck” doesn’t count. Dig deeper. What’s your real motivation? Is it freedom? Is it helping others? Is it creating something that outlasts you?
When you understand your “why,” every decision you make becomes clearer. You’ll stop wasting time on things that don’t align with your purpose.
Tip: Keep asking yourself why until you get to the root. It’s uncomfortable, but it’s also life-changing.
4. Explore Your Core Values
Your values are the bedrock of who you are. They guide your decisions and dictate what feels right or wrong. If you don’t know your core values, you’ll keep making choices that leave you feeling unfulfilled. Think about what makes you feel proud or what you’d defend fiercely. Those are your values in action. My Example I value simplicity and experiences over material things. I’d rather invest in a trip with friends than buy a designer watch. What are your values? And are you living in alignment with them?
5. Accept Your Strengths and Weaknesses
You’ve got to own your gifts and your flaws. Embrace your strengths and celebrate them, but also acknowledge your weaknesses. Self-improvement starts with awareness.
6. Listen to Your Emotions
Your emotions aren’t enemies; they’re messengers. Most of us have been conditioned to hide or dismiss our feelings, but that’s where we go wrong. Learn to sit with your emotions and understand what they’re trying to tell you. It’s hard, I won’t lie. But it’s necessary. Need Support? If you’ve struggled with emotional neglect or are just bad at naming your feelings, check out communities like r/emotionalneglect. Sometimes knowing you’re not alone makes it easier to heal.
7. Try New Experiences
You won’t discover new parts of yourself if you never step out of your comfort zone. I’m an introvert, so I know how daunting this can feel. But I’ve learned that trying new things in small doses can open up whole worlds you didn’t know you needed.
Think of it like sampling life—just enough to find out what clicks and what doesn’t.
